I am originally from Colombia but I lived in Argentina for the last 4 years. I am a chemical engineer specialized in environmental and sanitary engineer. I came to NY to improved my english and taking a rest of my work. I worked in a mine for 2 years, in the Argentina desert. I had to work for 42 days without break and come back to my home Colombia only for 10 days, this regimen was exhausting. I love New York, I think that you can found all the world in the same place. Although, when I came to NY I was surprising about the rats in the subway, here the rats are a plague. Here I fell good but I miss my family, however it is no the first time that we are far away. But fortunately, internet makes easier communicate.
What are the stereotypes of Americans?
The United States is a unique nation in several ways, but there is especially one which fascinates me. The diversity of ideas and meanings about the American people is amazing, and the stereotypes are many. I will use some of the stereotypes I believe are the most popular for describe Americans.
Anytime that I think of America I associate it with obesity. Mc Donald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s are American brands. Those restaurants are all around the world, and the food that they sale is unhealthy. Fast food is a synonym of America’s lifestyle. But now that I’m staying here my mind has changed. In New York, many people are worried about how many calories have the food and they try to eating healthy, Whole foods and Trader Joes are new options where you can find this king of food.
Capitalism is the way that I see America, in this country people are materialism and consumerist. Everything in US is XXI century: They love their big cars, houses, food and huge events. People here when have something broken they, usually, send it to trash instead of fix it. Americans think they can buy happiness. Despite, now I think they are hard-workers, they do their best to get it. Here people work a lot, generally people here have more that one job at a time.
Americans love her flag and national holidays. They are patriotic, that means that they defends theirs rights and protest for freedom. This issues also include participate in their Federal Government’s decisions on social security, Medicare, banking as well war. In this country people are worried about participated in the decision making process
Environmental unconsciousness is a big issue in the U.S. This country is the second highest carbon dioxide emissor and is one of the few countries that did not ratify Kyoto protocol. Unfortunately, this idea doesn’t change in my mind.
Stereotypes are beliefs about another culture, race or person that has no logic or evidence to support the negative thoughts and sometimes those ideas are difficult to change, but when you live in the place you can discover the culture from the inside and you can changed it.
