AMERICAN STEREO TYPE Chae Eun Lee
I have been thinking about American stereo types for one month I was taking this class. I’m not sure this is an American stereo type or not but I want to tell you about language culture of the American stereo type.
Before I came to New York I thought most of American didn't like learning to any other language but they would ignore someone who didn't speak English well. When I watched some American movies most of actor could speak English very well even they were foreigner. Anyway now I know some American like learning to other languages but most of which were Spanish or French or something like that. That is the reason why I still stand by my thought about American stereo type - American didn't like learning to any other language but they would ignore someone who didn't speak English well.
Psy, who is Korean singer, was very catchy because of Kangnam Style of his song. He could speak English that was his special advantage. Some of Psy's fan, they were Koreans, were really proud of that Psy can speak English fluently.
But one day I found a article, which was written by American journalist, that said "Psy can speak English but looks uncomfortable. He should practice speaking English more." That time I was overwhelmed. Psy studied in Berkley Music School and he lived in U.S for over 8 years!!!
Asian culture is very different from American culture as well as language, which are sometimes totally opposite. I've never met any American who can speak Korean well.
Learning to language is hard, some of stereo type’s Americans don’t speak any other language, don’t know any other culture but they sometimes ignore, complain about Asian uncomfortable accent. If someone who can’t speak any other language, they were complaining more about my bad accent.
