What are stereotypes of Americans Hyunju Lee
America has lots of immigrants from diverse countries and exists a varierty of subcultures from them. Nevertheless, Americans adopted counterless cultures and then create new culture, but people still hold stereotypes of Americans. When I moved to New York, I had strongly agreed that Americans have their unique stereotypes which tend to individualism, have flexible body and like to eat junk food.
First of all, when I moved New York from Korea, I was thinking Americans respect individualism. For example, people care about someone’s privacy and personal space on subway, market and any crowded public places. Americans don’t like to ask someone’s age, marriage status and family’s job but in Korea, people would like to ask lots of private question every people from first meeting. I was uncomfortable sometime when Korean asked me about age, boyfriend and family history. For me, one of good benefit of living here is Americans never persuade me to answer my private. So I still have believed that Americans follow individualism.
Second of all, before I came here I thought Americans were flexible murcles and stretchable bone structure. For instance, while I was watching American dancers’ movement, I believed that their flexible were innate quality from bone. However, after I talked and saw my American friends, I knew many Americans have unflexible bodies.
Third of all, I have guessed many Americans enjoy eat junk foods. For example, Americans establish many junk food companies as McDonald’s. Burger King, KFC ect.
In conclusion, I still have believed two stereotypes of Americans that hold individualism and like to eat junk foods. Two years living in USA getting change me like American which I am familiar of two of stereotypes. However, I don’t think anymore that Americans have lithe body. It was seeing a big tree in forest that we couldn't see a whole tree in the forest. I think I had a narrow aspect of stereotypes of Americans.
