I have been in NJ for ten months because of my husband's relocation to US office. I became homesick as soon as I moved to US. Because living abroad is the first time and US culture is very different from Japan one. Briefly expressed, US is dynamic. On the other hand, Japan is static. So I was very confused initialy. Then I had been getting to used it. Now I realize great aspects of US, especially NYC. NYC is powerful and exciting. People from various countries have been living in NYC.They do their best. their energy encourages me very much. I'd like to take advantage of living in different culture to grow myself. Finally, I' m very happy to join this class and I'm glad to meet everyone!Thank you!
What are stereotypes of Americans?
I would like to describe two topics about stereotypes. One is about BBQ and the other is about soda. When I had moved US, I was very surprised at an American custom and culture. It took long time, until I got used to the American life. Because culture of between US and Japan are very different.
First, Americans love BBQ. I have lived in apartments for 9 months. There is apartment’s garden in front of my room. There are two BBQ grills. People have been doing BBQ all evening. Even if it’s rainy day, some people do BBQ. Now I am watching the garden and people are doing BBQ. I am very surprised. Because I have never seen BBQ grill equipped with apartments in Japan. Almost Japanese people don’t do a BBQ at their home. It carries out as leisure in the seashore or the mountain. I think BBQ is a part of life in US. This is a very good custom which people can enjoy meals outside.
Secondly, Americans like soda. When I went to a fast food restaurant, customers from children to old people ordered very big sodas. There is a big difference in the size of soda between US and Japan. A small size soda of US deserves a large size soda of Japan. I am wondering why Americans don’t care about a ton of sugar in a soda. I am worried about their health. It is very bad for the body to take sugar too much. I think they should take care of consuming sugar.
Finally, it is interesting that there are many differences of lifestyle each country. I think by knowing stereotypes of Americans, it will lead to getting to know US.
